The New York City Department of Correction marked the culmination of Women’s History Month with a landmark Women’s Conference held on March 31 at the Robert N. Davoren Center on Rikers Island.

In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the agency’s Division of Programs and Community Partnerships hosted a special luncheon and panel discussion to honor the contributions of women serving within one of the city’s most demanding professions. The event brought together staff members for a day focused on recognition, empowerment, and connection.
Moderated by Acting Assistant Chief Carter, the conference featured a dynamic panel of speakers, including actress, producer, and author La La Anthony, lifestyle and wellness coach Nikita Gibson, and entrepreneur Khadine. Discussions covered a wide range of topics, including mental wellness, career growth, and the challenges of balancing motherhood with professional responsibilities.
Speaking during the event, RNDC Executive Director Medard highlighted the resilience and dedication of women in correctional services. “Today we gather to celebrate the incredible women who show up day after day in one of the most demanding professions,” Medard said. “The women in our agency lead, protect, uplift, and carry more than most people will ever understand. Yet, they still find a way to give to others—today is about giving back to them.”
The conference also forms part of broader initiatives by the department aimed at promoting physical fitness, mental health awareness, and stronger workplace support systems. These programs are designed to enhance staff well-being while reinforcing the agency’s mission to serve and protect the people of New York City.

As Women’s History Month 2026 draws to a close, the event stands as a powerful reminder of the vital role women play across all sectors—especially in public service roles that often go unseen but remain essential to community safety and resilience.
